After a lengthy report by SMMUSD CFO Jan Maez suggesting the potential viability of separate Santa Monica and Malibu school districts, the school board unanimously agreed to move forward together with AMPS and others to formally explore the feasibility of separation. The presentation, subsequent public comments, and board discussion took place in front of a packed house of separation supporters in Malibu’s City Council Chambers.
Many thanks to everyone who attended tonight’s board meeting and/or otherwise supported this investigation!!! After many years and much disappointment, the path seems to be open for a thorough investigation of separation and reasonable expectations of the creation of a path to independence!

Thanks to everyone for the hard work that went into the report. As a grandparent of a Malibu first grader, I’m grateful for a community that values education enough to meet the challenges of this generation. Proud of you!
When we decided to move from Tiburon and the Reed Union School district, looking at similar quality schools, we were thrilled to find that Webster Elementary is equal if not better. I believe if you find a community that welcomes parent participation and involvement, you will find top rated schools. BIG thanks to all the parents here.
In the last few months, fear, doubt and confusion in regard to the Malibu schools became the topic of discussion.
Thankfully, we have people that sincerely care about the well being of our youth, the future leaders of the world.
I am excited to be part of this change and want to thank all of you (you too Craig Foster- the man who never sleeps) that put in so much time, energy and heart into trying to make this a better world for our kids.
